November 20

I guess I’ll do it this way.

So, I seem to remember someone somewhere talking ill of Facebook’s status updates, in that they don’t keep a forever running log, and after however many months all the inane activities you were up to however many months ago goes the way of the minidisc; that is to say, gone and lost forever; only a faint, weird memory of something you were once really into. And maybe if this were 1995, I’d be happy with just memories, or, if ambitious, a hand written journal. But it is late 2009 and my handwriting sucks and the internet is….basically everywhere. I tried to keep handwritten notes in a very lovely leather bound monogrammed journal (thanks L-dub) but, uh, well. My handwriting sucks. And i attribute this to the fast pace in which my brain spews out thought, and my typing hand has worked in tandem with that rapid spew for a long time and I’m just better able this way to think and write and get it all down in perfectly legible letters. Whether or not what I’m saying makes any sense is debatable. But still. Here we are. So, anyway, I’m on this trip right now to New Zealand. I have spent years dreaming of this trip and one year planning and saving money for it. And now I’m here, and, while usually I could really not give about my inane daily activities, when you’re in a foreign country for the first time basically ever, suddenly those inane activities become more endearing and thoughtful and funny and more like what I wish everyday in normal life was like. But it’s not normal life here, guys, because they have lamb at Subway.

I’d started to make posts in Facebook, but in light of that paragraph up above, from here on out I’m using Tumblr instead of Facebook to keep log of all of the really interesting, amazing, hilarious, insightful, witty, unique, charming and thoughtful things that I’ll be doing and experiencing and thinking while in NZ, because I am brilliant and you’ll really want to read these things. I swear.

To prove my point, here is a catalogue of what I’d previously posted at Facebook, in chronological order, starting the day before my trip:

November 7: Bags.

November 8: BRB America, gotta go to New Zealand.

November 10: Jesus Christchurch I made it. Checked luggage with my camping gear did not. Waiting patiently (with fingers crossed) for them to call my hostel today.

November 10, later on: My luggage was just a little bashful is all. He’s on his way to me now. Reunited and it feels so good.

November 12: The rumours of New Zealand’s beauty are true. Very, very true.

November 12, later on: At the vineyard, mind is blown.

November 14: For $600 US dollars, I got a 1993 Toyota Celica, with AC, 10 disc changer, and just over 100,000 miles. Funny old kiwi character just needed to get rid of it. My host at the vineyard wanted it too, so I’m just going to sell it to him when I leave. Easy as pie, that was.

November 19: Roasted lamb at Subway.

November 19, later on: Right-hand drive, left-hand side; angry motorists and now it is me; the incompetent foreign driver, with no shame, only fear: for both of our lives.

November 19, later on: Also: Sun made my skin look like a tomato. I heard it’s mandatory to get a sun burn on vacation. And: I’m finally getting to see all those weird cars I used to drive in Gran Turismo. Toyota Starlet Carat?

November 20: What is it about having a whole country at your disposal that makes you read books like you’ve got nothing better to do?

See how witty and insightful this is going to be?

I reckon I might crosspost to Facebook, but thats a minor point and I can’t believe I’m ending my post with that thought.
